After a long and complicated
negotiations contract for the sell of the Bf109E to the VV KJ were
signed in April 1938. Initially contract for a 50 samples was signed but
some later 50 more was put on agreement. New fighter was mostly ferried
buy experienced pilots to Yugoslavia. Operator of the Bf109 became 6.
Vazduhoplovni puk and some later 2. Vazduhoplovni puk. Also few samples
were delivered to the flying school. Various data is available of the
total number of delivered planes and are around 80 planes.
Bf109 was leading edge of the Yugoslav defense in regards to its number
and flying qualities. Some construction was upgraded and Yugoslav
samples weighted 40 kg more than the German original. This plane was
used in developing of combat tactics of the other Yugoslav fighters.
Number of them was damaged in pre war activities and many of them were
due to the narrow wheel track. For conversion was used Bf108 trainer.

Bf -109 E pilots had downed: 7 German Bf-109 E, 2 Bf-110, 4 Ju-87, 1
Ju-88, 1 He-111, 2 Do-17 and 2 Hs -126 and one Italian Cant Z -1007 bis.
Most of the combat was done in the Belgrade and Serbian area. The
Vazduhoplovstvo Vojno lost all of its Bf-109E fighters in short war and
21 of those was destroyed by own crew.
